Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong recently revealed that he will hand over power to his chosen successor Lawrence Wong on May 15, ahead of elections scheduled for next year.
Mr Huang has been designated prime minister-designate since April 2022, taking over the role after the previous heir apparent unexpectedly quit.
Who is Lawrence Wong?
– Lawrence Wong, 51, MP for Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC. He entered politics during the 2011 general election, when he campaigned as part of a five-member People’s Action Party team in the West Coast GRC. He has also held positions at the Ministry of Defence, Communications and Information, Culture, Community and Youth, National Development and Education.
– Mr. Huang is a “bookworm, guitarist and dog lover,” according to his Instagram bio.
– After completing his initial education at Tanjong Katong Secondary School and Victoria Junior College, Lawrence Wong went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison to pursue a bachelor’s degree in economics. Mr. Huang received his master’s degree in economics from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He also studied at the Harvard Kennedy School. He earned a master’s degree in public administration.
– Mr Wong served as a civil servant before entering politics. He served as chief executive of the Energy Market Authority and principal private secretary to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
– As Co-Chair of the Multi-Ministry Task Force on Covid-19, Mr Ng oversees the Singapore government’s response to the pandemic.
