Man arrested on suspicion of murdering mother as she pushed baby in pram

A man has been arrested on suspicion of stabbing a mother to death as she was pushing her baby in a pram following an emergency manhunt in Bradford city centre.

Kulsuma Akter, 27, was stabbed multiple times as she pushed her pram through Westgate, with onlookers and a passing doctor rushing to her aid .

Despite their best efforts, she was pronounced dead at hospital, while her children were not injured in the attack.

The suspect fled the scene of the attack and police launched a four-day manhunt following the stabbing on Saturday afternoon.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed on Tuesday morning that a 25-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of murdering a 27-year-old man in Aylesbury.

Both West Yorkshire Police and Greater Manchester Police have reported previous contact with the victim to the police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

A 23-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender following a number of raids in Oldham, Burnley and Chester.

Detective Inspector Stacey Atkinson, of the police’s homicide and investigations team, said: “This was a tragic incident in which a mother lost her life in the most horrific circumstances.

“We know this is of great concern to the local community.

“The local community police team is patrolling the area to ensure community safety.

“We would like to thank Thames Valley Police for their support and assistance in this matter.”
