New weather warnings issued for parts of UK after Storm Catherine disrupts

New weather warnings have been issued after Storm Catherine brought devastation to parts of the UK and Ireland, including a possible threat to life in some coastal areas.

Planes have difficulty landing at some airports Flights were canceled on Saturday, The storm brought winds exceeding 70 miles per hour and left tens of thousands without power.

Now, with the arrival of a second low pressure system, the Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for Monday and Tuesday.

The French meteorological service named it Storm Piric. Northern France will be worst affected, but strong winds of up to 60mph will be felt around Wales and along the southern coast of England.

Met Office warnings include:

• A yellow warning for high winds covering the northwest Highlands until midnight on Sunday
• A yellow warning for high winds is in place for south-west England from 6pm Monday to 6am Tuesday
• A yellow wind warning is in effect for large areas of southern England and Wales and the west coast from 1am to 3pm on Tuesday
• A yellow warning for rainfall is in place for southern, central and eastern Scotland from 1am to 6pm on Tuesday

The Met Office said gusty winds in southwest England “have a high risk of causing injury or risk to life due to waves and debris”.

It also warned of possible power outages and travel disruptions.

Meanwhile, 226 flood alerts and warnings have been issued across England, Scotland and Wales.

Flooding is expected in areas around Salisbury as far south as Bournemouth, Dumfries and Galloway, the Western Isles and Orkney.

A girl was rescued from the sea near Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin, Ireland on Saturday night.

At about 8.20pm, she was swept into the sea from the East Pier of Dun Laoghaire Port. A rescue operation was launched immediately. She was then taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
