Elon Musk-owned social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, on Thursday expanded its Community Notes contributor positions to India. With this development, Indian users can apply to become contributors to this open-source moderation tool to rate and comment on posts that are misleading or spread misinformation. Community Notes officially launched in November 2022, but at launch, moderators were selected from only a handful of countries. Now, with the addition of India, the tool has contributors from 69 countries.

The announcement was made through postal From the community notes official account. It said: “Welcome new contributors from India. Our first contributors are joining today and we will continue to expand over time. As always, we will monitor quality to ensure that people from a variety of perspectives find notes useful Help.” Musk also release About development.

Becoming a Community Notes contributor is easy, but users must meet some eligibility criteria. According to X guidelines, users must have joined the platform at least six months ago, have a verified phone number from a trusted phone operator, and have no recent violations of the platform’s rules. This account should not be associated with other community notes accounts.

Once these requirements are met, users can apply to become a contributor here. The process only requires highlighting the language the user is proficient in and agreeing to X’s terms and conditions. However, one thing to note is that after joining as a contributor, users will not be able to comment or rate posts directly. Contributors can only rate community comments to indicate how helpful they are. Based on the regularity of the rating notes and the accuracy of the assessment posts, the platform can later contact users to become contributors and write community notes for others to rate.

Interestingly, before November 2022, Community Notes was called Birdwatch. Birdwatch launched in 2020 as a moderation tool to identify and debunk misinformation and propaganda. However, after Musk took over the social media platform, he renamed the tool and made it open source. X states that this feature is not under its control and only users rate and comment on posts. In addition, the platform releases all community note data every day and is available for download and viewing.
