In Assam’s biggest-ever drug bust, more than 20 kg of heroin worth up to Rs 210 crore has been seized from a vehicle entering the state from Mizoram, officials said on Thursday.
Acting on a tip-off, the Assam Police Special Task Force (STF) intercepted the car near Saheedpur under Silchar police station in Cachar district in the southern part of the state.
The Assam Police’s action earned praise from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who posted on of drug seizures. Officials said the vehicle was driven by a man named Laldinuwa, who has been arrested. It started its journey in Aizawl with the drugs hidden behind, under containers of bread and biscuits.
Assam STF chief, Superintendent of Police Partha Sarathi Mahanta said: βWe received information 10 days ago that large quantities of drugs would be transported from neighboring states to the mainland and then supplied to some big cities. .ββ¦Three days ago, we got the news that the vehicle had set off. “
“Over 21.5 kg of heroin was intercepted on Thursday night, of which 18 kg was purest heroin and 3.5 kg was ready for consumption. The consignment is worth at least Rs 210 crore but 18 kg of pure heroin will be mixed with other materials. 50-60 kg,β he added.
One source said the entire consignment could be worth as much as Rs 540 crore.
