iPhone users will soon be able to sideload Patreon-supported apps in the EU

Apple launched the ability to sideload iPhone apps in the European Union (EU) last month to comply with Digital Markets Act (DMA) regulations, and users who update to iOS 17.4 will soon be able to install Patreon-powered apps via the AltStore. is an alternative app store designed to enable sideloading on iOS. As a result, developers will have another way to monetize their apps in the EU while sidestepping Apple’s commission on apps distributed through its App Store.

AltStore developer Riley Testut said in a post on Threads that the popular sideloading tool will soon launch in the EU as an alternative app marketplace, which will be fully compliant with Apple’s policies for third-party app stores in the region . Testut also shared a screen recording of the process of installing apps through the AltStore App Market, which appears to only require a few clicks.

It is worth remembering that even developers distributing free apps will have to pay Apple a core technology fee of €0.5 (roughly Rs. 45) after the app is downloaded more than 1 million times. Because download counts also include app updates, CTF may apply to multiple apps that are popular in third-party app stores.

Teshtut informed TechCrunch said that the EU’s AltStore app market will allow developers to offer Patreon-supported apps, providing in-app purchases or subscription services equivalent to Apple’s App Store. Proceeds from these Patreon memberships can be used to access specific apps or features, while also allowing developers to monetize their apps or games.

Developers told the publication that EU iPhone users running the AltStore App Market will soon be able to install beta versions of clipboard manager Clip and Nintendo emulator Delta after becoming a Patreon member – for a monthly fee of $3 (approximately Rs. 250) . Users will be able to download the standard version of Delta for free, while a $1 Patreon membership will allow access to the stable version of the clipboard manager.
