A Pakistani court on Saturday sentenced 51 supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan to five years in prison on two counts for their role in attacks on key military installations last year.

In May last year, supporters of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf allegedly attacked several military installations, including the army headquarters in Rawalpindi and the ISI building in Faisalabad, to vent their anger against the party’s founder. Angry people arrested in corruption cases.

This is the first conviction against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders, workers and supporters in connection with the May 9 unrest in the country, mainly in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.

Those convicted include Kaleemullah Khan, a member of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party.

The Gujranwala Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) sentenced 51 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf supporters to one year in prison on two counts for attacking an army camp in Gujranwala (about 80 km from Lahore), law enforcement agency personnel and arson Burn police cars.

The court also fined each of them PKR 10,000, according to a court official.

ATC Judge Natasha Naseem delivered the verdict while conducting the hearing at the Gujranwala Central Jail, which was heavily guarded outside. The case against the criminal is still ongoing on camera.

In the May 9 violence in Gujranwala, a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf worker was killed and dozens of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf workers and policemen were injured.
