The new Kobe Bryant statue outside Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles will be updated after various spelling errors were discovered in the etching around the sculpture’s base, the Los Angeles Times reports. nbc news.
Basketball reporter Dre Voigt shared an image of a spelling mistake he discovered on a statue honoring the Los Angeles Lakers icon, which shows Kobe Bryant scoring 81 points against the Toronto Raptors in 2006. Also included are misspellings in Jose Calderon’s name and Von Wafer’s score on the replica box on the statue. In addition to spelling Wafer’s name as “Vom” instead of “Von,” the word “decision” is also misspelled. Additionally, Calderon’s last name is “Calderson.” The list of Kobe Bryant’s career accomplishments on the other side of the base is formatted incorrectly.

The sculpture depicts Kobe Bryant’s pose during the historic game in which he scored the second-highest score in NBA history.
A Lakers spokesperson said they are already working to resolve the issue. “We have been aware of this issue for several weeks and are working to correct it as quickly as possible,” he said in a statement.
The 19-foot-tall, 4,000-pound bronze statue was unveiled on Feb. 8 to commemorate his No. 8 jersey. It’s one of three events planned to honor the five-time NBA champion.
In January 2020, Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash along with his daughter Gianna and seven others. Two more statues will show the father and daughter, and another will show the basketball player who wore No. 24, his wife Vanessa said.
