Rawalpindi:
The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) and police on Thursday night successfully thwarted an attack attempt on Adiala Central Jail and detained three terrorists, Dawn reported.
“Besides heavy weapons and ammunition, which the police claimed to have been found among the terrorists who were captured and later moved to a location unknown to the public,” police officials said.
“Authorities intercepted a potential attack on Adiala Central Prison and detained three Afghan terrorists,” a Rawalpindi police spokesman said, Dawn reported.
The suspects, reportedly Afghans, were found in possession of a large cache of heavy weapons and ammunition.
After their arrest, they were moved to an undisclosed location for further investigation, Dawn reported.
“Items seized included automatic heavy weapons, grenades, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and detailed maps of the prison premises,” Chief Police Officer Syed Khalid Hamdani said.
CPO (City Police Officer) Syed Khalid Hamdani said the police along with other law enforcement agencies are currently conducting search operations in and around the jail.
The Adiala Central Jail is already facing overcrowding issues, with twice the number of people currently being detained as compared to its expected capacity. Notably, the detainees include former prime minister and PTI leader Imran Khan, as well as former foreign minister and former chief minister of Punjab.
The incident highlights the ongoing threat posed by terrorism and the ongoing efforts of security forces to maintain public safety and maintain law and order. As the investigation continues, authorities remain vigilant and committed to thwarting any potential security threats to ensure the safety of citizens and institutions.
