British police recover 1995 F1 driver's stolen Ferrari

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

British police have recovered a rare Ferrari that was stolen from a former Formula One driver in London 28 years ago. According to the Metropolitan Police, the red Ferrari F512M was stolen from Gerhard Berger in 1995, sent to Japan, and brought to the UK in 2023. The vehicle, worth £350,000, was one of two Ferraris stolen. One of them is still missing, according to the New York Times British Broadcasting Corporation.

In 1995, Mr. Berger was in Italy competing in the San Marino Grand Prix when his luxury car was stolen.

In January this year, the Italian car brand submitted a report to the Metropolitan Police, bringing it to their attention. In 2023, Ferrari inspected a car purchased by an American customer through a British broker, which revealed that the car was stolen.

Metropolitan Police Inspector Mike Pilbeam is leading the investigation. He said: “The stolen Ferrari had been missing for more than 28 years and we found it in just four days. Our investigation was painstaking and included contacting authorities around the world.”

He added: “We work quickly with partners including the National Crime Agency, Ferrari and international car dealers, and this collaboration helps understand the background of the vehicle and prevent it from leaving the country.”

However, no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

The last production version of the iconic Ferrari Testarossa was the Ferrari F512M. Between 1994 and 1996, approximately 500 cars were produced. Ferrari’s flagship model for much of the 1980s was the Testarossa, which featured prominently in the hit crime drama Miami Vice.

Mr Berger is one of the celebrities who owns the car, along with the likes of Michael Jordan, Mike Tyson and Elton John.
