Rajya Sabha elections: BJP’s victory was the result of cross voting by Congress MLAs

New Delhi:

The leader of the opposition and other BJP MLAs met Himachal Pradesh Governor this morning and demanded a floor test for the Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu-led government in the state assembly.

This comes a day after BJP managed to get its candidate victory on the lone Rajya Sabha seat. BJP’s victory was the result of cross-voting and draw of Congress MLAs which went in its favour.

Opposition leader Jairam Thakur said after the meeting, “When our chances seemed very slim, we won. BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan won the Rajya Sabha elections. At present, the Congress government has lost the moral right to remain in power. It’s over.” Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla.

Jai Ram Thakur alleged that when BJP members tried to talk to Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania after he was not allowed to vote on cut motions related to the health department, the marshals misbehaved with him and assaulted him. He said, “We have informed the Governor about this.”

This meeting took place amid discussions that BJP will bring a no-confidence motion in the Assembly today as soon as the budget session begins.

Mr Thakur – who was also the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh till 2022 when the BJP lost to the Congress – yesterday sought division of votes to pass the state budget instead of a voice vote.

If allowed, the division of votes would establish each party’s actual support. If the Congress government fails to pass the budget, it will automatically prove that it does not have majority in the House.

Congress has 40 MLAs in the assembly and its candidate Abhishek Manu Singhvi was expected to win easily. During the voting held on Tuesday for the lone Rajya Sabha seat, six Congress MLAs and three independent MLAs supporting the government reportedly cast their votes for Harsh Mahajan.

BJP has 25 members in the 68-member assembly.

After the results, Mr. Mahajan said that the Congress government does not have the majority. “The state government is currently in minority. The people sitting in the government are ready to come this way. They are unhappy with the government. They are so upset that they can do anything. This government will not last.” It will collapse under its own weight,” he told news agency ANI.
