Also known as the “Sky Caves”, these are approximately 10,000 mysterious dwellings clinging to the cliffs, some of which rise 150 feet above the valley floor. Located on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau, Mustang has been a part of Nepal since the 18th century. Despite its unification, the region has preserved its traditional Tibetan culture in isolation. Formerly known as the Independent Kingdom of Lo, Mustang or Upper Mustang, it is characterized by its high-altitude desert with vibrant red and ocher landscapes, deep valleys and a vast blue sky. Limited access to the area was provided for travelers in 1991.
The news portal further noted that for centuries, itinerant monks of the oldest school of Tibetan Buddhism have roamed the valleys of Mustang, using its caves to practice advanced tantric yoga. The deep valleys of Mustang are the perfect place for those who want to practice tummo, a form of Tibetan breathing that allows a person to generate heat or deal with negative emotions at high altitude.
Tourists can walk on narrow rocks, climb into the cave and enjoy the peace and breathtaking views of the sky and mountains. Most of the caves are empty, but some have frescoes and sculptures inside. The entrances to some caves are closed and must be opened by a caretaker from a nearby village. Formerly a vibrant center of Buddhist scholarship and art, Mustang’s temples also feature amazing Tibetan art.
