Mariah Carey For fifty years, he has incorporated pop, R&B, gospel and hip-hop into hits. But when she heard a few cuts from her secret 1990s grunge album, the superstar stood up and clapped.

On Friday night, two days before the Grammy Awards, Carey was honored as MusiCares Person of the Year for her musical achievements and philanthropy. The award is presented a week before the Grammy Awards by MusiCares, a charity that supports musicians in need.

“She’s one of a kind,” says longtime collaborator Babyface. “Maria, you are every songwriter and producer’s dream. You have struck gold. You are the blueprint for great songwriters.”

As early as 1995, Kelly secretly recorded and co-produced the grunge album “Someone’s Ugly Daughter” with her friend Clarissa Dane under the name Chick. It wasn’t until her 2020 memoir that Carey revealed she was behind the project, which featured Dane on lead vocals and background vocals.

British girl group Flo sings backing vocals on “Dream Lover” billy porter Jennifer Hudson opened the show with “I Don’t Wanna Cry” and then moved into “Vision of Love.”

Surprise guest Busta Rhymes performed “I Know What You Want” with Chanté Moore and Spliff Star.

After Charlie Puth’s full rendition of “I Still Believe,” John Legend sat behind the piano to play “Hero.” Grammy nominee Laufey sang “It’s Like That,” and in a nod to Carey’s favorite color, Adam Lambert wore a lavender jacket while performing “Can’t Let Go.” Kesha sang “Obsessed” while wearing sunglasses. Maggie Rogers performed “Honey,” then told Kelly, “You’re the coolest.”

The lavender rose centerpiece on the table is decorated with a metallic butterfly, while small dollops of butter are in the shape of small butterflies. Carey’s sixth studio album, Butterfly, was released in 1997.

Carey’s necklaces, earrings and bracelets were studded with diamonds, and she sang more at the dinner table than on the stage.

Traditionally, the winners perform some of their biggest hits at the end of the typically three-hour concert. This year, the show ended in less than two hours, with Jon Batiste leading some performers of Carey’s holiday classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” The guest of honor was led on stage and sang together for about 90 seconds during the finale.

Maybe Carey will save her five-octave vocal range for next Friday, when she’ll perform at the Olympics opening ceremony in Cortina, Milan, Italy, before performing in Abu Dhabi the next day.

Befitting her diva status, Kelly was led to the podium by a woman trailing the train of her sheer black lace dress behind her.

“Oh, tonight is so wonderful,” she said. “It’s surreal to hear some of the greatest artists in the world reimagine my songs. When I was a little girl writing lyrics in my notebook late at night, I could only dream of someone hearing them and connecting to them.”

Carey seemed genuinely moved by the honor, which has previously been bestowed upon artists including Bruce Springsteen, Barbra Streisand, Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson, Joni Mitchell, Dolly Parton and Tom Petty. She told the crowd it was “one of the most profound moments of my life and career.”

“Oh my God!” Carey said. “I had the opportunity to sit there and listen and feel like I was lucky to be here. So much love, so much music. It was overwhelming in the best way.”
