England Troubled by injuries before the game six kingdoms Bring props Finn Baxter Getting ready for foot surgery.
Baxter has not played for Harlequins since December 14 but was due to join Steve BorthwickTeams in Girona this week Ahead of England’s first game against Wales on February 7.
But the 23-year-old libertine will undergo a procedure that will see him seemingly ruled out of the early rounds of the competition. Wing Ben Curry will also not travel to Spain, with Jack Cunningham being called up to the England training squad and Curry continuing his recovery with Sale Sharks.
The blow to Baxter is another blow to the inventory of props available to Borthwick. Conservatives Will Stewart (Achilles) and Asher Opoku-Foyore (shoulder) will both miss the Six Nations through injury, leaving Trevor Davison and the unused Velixa Serra provide support for Joe Hayes.
In terms of freedom, Bevan Rodd and Emmanuel Iyogun are options to go alongside Ellis Gengewho was outstanding in the Bristol team.
Harlequins coach Jason Gilmour hopes Baxter will feature in Six Nations after his team’s defeat to Leicester City on Saturday.
“I know he’s had a look at his foot this week with the England medical staff,” Gilmour said. “I think he will be in the Six Nations but when, I’m not sure.”
Winger Tom Roebuck, flyback Finn Smith and center Ollie Lawrence are the other members of the rehabbed squad called up to Girona’s training camp. Everyone was tipped to be on target for the first game at the Allianz Stadium at Twickenham, but Borthwick has not ruled any of them out yet.
“The fact that we have brought them to this camp shows that they are not far away from returning to grass,” the England head coach said. “I think they have a chance.
“For the Wales Test, I think it’s going to be a tight game. We need the rehab to go well and tick all the boxes along the way. It’s a tight game but I think they’re all on the line.”
