The Met Office said: “Easterly winds will increase early on Tuesday morning, bringing gusts of 60 to 70mph to eastern and northern Northern Ireland, with gusts reaching 75mph in some coastal areas. Heavy rain will be an additional danger.

“Winds are likely to die down a bit in the early afternoon before increasing again to similar speeds from the southeast in the late afternoon and early evening.”

In coastal areas, large waves could throw beach material onto nearby roads, seafronts and properties, posing a “danger to life”. If you are on the coast, the Met Office advises that you be aware of large waves during stormy weather to stay safe as large waves can sweep you out to sea even from the shore.

The weather service warned coastal residents to be careful walking near cliffs; saying people should know their routes and keep dogs on leashes. In an emergency, they are advised to call 999 for assistance from the Coast Guard.

Extended journey times and flight cancellations are expected to affect road, rail, air and ferry services and result in some road and bridge closures.

Driving in these hazardous conditions is not recommended, and forecasters recommend staying indoors if possible to avoid injuries from the high winds.
