The president’s televised address urged his government to consider other countries, including Australia and U.K. Legislation is being introduced to “restrict or prohibit” children’s use of social media.

About 50% of children under the age of 18 in Egypt use social media platforms, and they may be exposed to harmful content, cyberbullying and abuse, according to a 2024 report by the National Center for Social and Criminological Research, a government think tank.

In December, Australia became the first country to ban children under 16 from using social media. The move sparked fierce debate over technology use, privacy, child safety and mental health and prompted other countries to consider similar measures.
