canadian prime minister Mark Carney Said on Sunday that his country had no intention of reaching a free trade deal with the United States China. He was responding to US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose 100% tariffs on imports from China. Canada If America’s northern neighbor goes ahead with trade deal with Beijing

Carney said his latest deal with China only reduced tariffs on a few industries that had been hit by tariffs recently.

Not so Trump, who posted, “China is successfully and completely taking over the once great country of Canada. I am sad to see this happening. I just want them to go away puck Alone! President DJT”

The Prime Minister stated that under the free trade agreements with the United States and Mexico, there is a commitment not to enter into free trade agreements with non-market economies without prior notification.

“We have no intention of doing that with China or any other non-market economy,” Carney said. “What we’re doing with China is correcting some of the problems that have arisen over the past few years.”

In 2024, Canada follows the United States and imposes a 100% tariff on electric vehicles from Beijing and a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum. In response, China imposed a 100% import tax on Canadian canola oil and meal, and a 25% import tax on pork and seafood.

During a visit to China this month, Carney broke with the United States and cut 100% of tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in exchange for lower tariffs on Canadian products.

Carney said China’s exports of electric vehicles to Canada will initially be capped at 49,000 units with a 6.1% tariff, and will increase to about 70,000 units within five years. There is no cap until 2024, he noted. He also said that China’s electric vehicle imports would be initially capped at about 3% of the 1.8 million vehicles sold in Canada each year, and in exchange, China is expected to start investing in the Canadian auto industry within three years.

“Must be concerned. Canada is systematically destroying itself. The deal with China is a disaster for them. Will go down as one of the worst deals in history. All their business moves to the United States. I want to see Canada survive and thrive! President DJT,” Trump posted on social media on Sunday.

Trump’s earlier post said that if Carney “thinks he will make Canada a ‘port of landing’ for Chinese goods and products shipped to the United States, he is sadly mistaken.”

“We cannot allow Canada to be an opportunity for the Chinese to dump cheap goods into the United States,” U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant said on ABC’s “This Week.”

“We have a (U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement), but based on that, which is going to be renegotiated this summer, I’m not sure what Prime Minister Carney is doing here other than trying to virtue signal to his globalist friends in Davos.”

Trump’s threat comes amid an escalating war of words with Carney as the Republican president’s push to acquire Greenland strains the NATO alliance.

Carney has emerged as a leader of a movement asking countries to find ways to unite and confront Trump’s America. “Middle powers have to act together because if you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu,” Carney said as Trump spoke in Davos, warning of coercive behavior by major powers without mentioning Trump by name. The prime minister’s comments were widely praised and watched, upstaging Trump at the World Economic Forum.

Trump pushed for the acquisition of Greenland after repeatedly criticizing Canada over its sovereignty and suggesting it be annexed to the United States as the 51st state. This week, he posted an altered image on social media showing a map of the United States with Canada, Venezuela, Greenland and Cuba as part of its territory.
