Car-sharing company Zipcar has confirmed it will cease operations in the UK after launching a consultation late last year.

The move will affect the company’s approximately 650,000 drivers across the country.

On December 1, the US-based company told UK customers that it planned to temporarily halt new bookings at the beginning of the year.

The company, which had 71 employees in the UK by the end of 2024, has launched formal consultations with staff.

In a new email to customers on Friday, the company said it “can now confirm that Zipcar will cease operating in the UK”.

The company added: “In accordance with clause 7.5 of the Membership Terms, please consider this as your written notice that we will officially close your account within 30 days.

“No new bookings can be made through Zipcar UK at the moment, but your account will remain open until February 16th.”

It added that starting in early 2026, customers will be entitled to a prorated refund for any remaining term of their current plan or subscription.

Zipcar says this will be done automatically and does not require any action from the user.

Accounts show the van and car rental company’s losses widened to £5.7m in 2024 as customers traveled less.
