In an interview with independent journalist Aaron Parnas, Pritzker attacked the Trump administration’s indiscriminate pursuit of people and compared it to the leadership of 20th-century dictator Adolf Hitler.

The governor said that during his State of the State address last February, he “likened what Donald Trump is doing in this country to what happened in the early days of Nazi Germany.”

“That’s where we are right now,” Pritzker said. “They’re going after brown and black people. They’re going after American citizens. They’re going after people who have done nothing wrong. And they’re doing it under the guise of saying this is the worst-case scenario, but it’s not.”

The governor said only 2.5% of people arrested in Illinois as a result of immigration crackdowns were charged or convicted of serious crimes.

“It took the Nazis one month, three weeks, two days, eight hours and 40 minutes to destroy a constitutional republic,” Pritzker said in a February speech.

“Tyranny requires your fear, your silence and your compliance. Democracy requires your courage,” he added.

In announcing Operation Midway, Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin accused Pritzker and other Illinois politicians of unleashing “Tron de Aragua gang members, rapists, kidnappers, and drug dealers on the streets of Chicago—putting American lives at risk and making Chicago a haven for criminals.”

“President Trump and [Homeland Security] secretary [Kristi] Noem has a clear message: No city is a safe haven for illegal alien crime. If you come to our country illegally and violate our laws, we will hunt you down, arrest you, deport you and you will never come back,” McLaughlin said.
