In its weather bulletin, the IMD said cold wave conditions are likely to continue over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, West Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Odisha for the next two days, before weakening thereafter.
Cold day conditions are also expected over parts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh during this period.
Dense to very dense fog is expected to remain a major concern over northwest India and Bihar.
According to IMD, foggy conditions are likely to persist during night and morning hours for several days in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, with dense fog likely to persist in some areas till January 22.
Rain and snowfall forecast
IMD said that under the influence of the incoming western disturbance, light to moderate rain and snowfall is likely in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh between January 16 and January 21.

During this period, there may be sporadic snowfall or rain in Uttarakhand.
IMD has predicted isolated rain over Punjab between January 18 and 20 and over Haryana, Chandigarh and West Uttar Pradesh on January 18 and 19.
According to the Meteorological Department, conditions are becoming favorable for withdrawal of Northeast Monsoon rains from Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe and adjoining parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka in the next two days.
Temperature trends in different areas
The IMD said minimum temperatures are expected to rise gradually by 3-5 degrees Celsius over northwest India over the next four days, while central and eastern India may see a slow rise in temperatures later this week.
In contrast, night temperatures over Maharashtra may experience a slight drop before gradually rising.
In the last 24 hours, the minimum temperature dropped below zero at many places in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, while Hisar in Haryana recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 0.2 degrees Celsius compared to the plains, the IMD said.
Delhi NCR weather forecast
For Delhi National Capital Region (NCR), the IMD has predicted cold wave conditions at isolated places along with moderate to dense fog in the morning on January 16.
Light clouds and shallow to moderate fog are likely to continue on January 17 and 18, due to which the night temperatures will gradually fall closer to normal levels.
