manchester city manager Guardiola expressed his frustration our There were inconsistencies in his side’s 2-0 League Cup win over Newcastle at St James’ Park.
Manchester City takes advantage in first leg of semi-finals Antoine Semenho Rayan Cherki sealed the win with his second goal in as many games.
However, Semenho’s second shot from a corner kick in the second half saw the visitors’ goal controversially ruled out, but a lengthy VAR review deemed it Erling Haaland Offside and hampering defender Malik Thiaw.
Guardiola expressed his dissatisfaction after the game, saying there were incidents that went unnoticed during City’s final game at St James’ Park in November.
Asked if he had received an explanation for the decision, Guardiola replied: “That’s a good question.
“I said now that I wanted to know why VAR came on in the 60th minute of the game Premier League The game against Newcastle – which we lost 2-1 – the score was 0-0 and it was (Fabian) Schaal’s penalty against Phil Foden and it wasn’t even considered (any).
“In the 20th minute, Jeremy Doku’s shot was awarded an unbelievable penalty and it wasn’t even VAR.
“Today, four people couldn’t make a decision because I didn’t know the line, but Newcastle’s second goal on the line was perfect.
“I didn’t doubt it for 10 years. I didn’t say anything when we lost 2-1 here. I didn’t say anything in the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace when Henderson got sent off after 30 or 40 minutes.”
“Well, that’s OK, but the fact that we didn’t say that… I’m pretty sure Howard Webb (technical director of professional match officials) is going to call me tomorrow and ask me to explain that.”
Guardiola added: “When you play a semi-final or a final and win 0-1, 0-0, 0-2, 1-1, because within five minutes after 0-1 they can equalize, it’s more difficult after that.
“I have zero doubts. For ten years when we lost semi-finals in big games, in the league, I said nothing. Sometimes on the touchline.
“But come on, in the same stadium, what happened? VAR stepped in, ‘Look, look’ – look at the 60th minute, the 20th minute, look at the two penalties.”
“Coming to the Premier League and winning, being 0-1 or 0-2 is a big difference for us.
“I don’t think Newcastle deserve any credit. I can say they deservedly won the game in the Premier League but why (VAR) didn’t intervene in both (incidents)?
“Over six minutes today (review) we couldn’t even discuss it with the referee. But they will call me.”
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe admits a trip to the Etihad Stadium in February will be a huge test for his side, who have five games to play before the second leg.
“I think this is probably our biggest challenge, our biggest test of everything, our belief level, our ability, our ability to score goals and defend,” he said.
“We had to defend well in that game or we had no chance.
“I guess that’s for another day. I think the beauty of the distance between the legs means you can put it away and forget about it. We’ve got a lot of big games to play before the second leg.”
