Allen, the 2018 champion, spent much of the week in bed but recovered from a 2-1 deficit to win five straight games to get back into the quarterfinals.
“I felt comfortable, which was weird because I couldn’t have prepared for this at all, I was in bed for a whole week with food poisoning,” Allen told TNT Sports.
“I just wanted to go out and do my best. If it was closer, I wouldn’t have much left, so I’m glad I’m over the line when I do that. I’m always going to play, I just might have to wear a diaper and watch TV. It’s not a good week.”
Asked what caused his illness, Allen said: “I wish I knew. I was lying in bed one night and had a sudden need to vomit for about six hours and three days later I could barely get out of bed. I spent the last few days trying to prepare for it and was just very, very weak.”
Williams admits he is not good enough to keep up with the Northern Irishman. “It was really poor,” Williams said of his performance. “I think my highest score was 35, which wasn’t great. As my career goes on, I’m going to get more and more of those and I have to accept that.
“I tried, even though it looked like I might not have tried, I tried my best, but my son had more rest time than I did at the junior level on the weekend. I was hoping he would give me some support.”
Later Monday, world champions Zhao Xintong After easing into the quarter-finals of the Masters, he stepped up his pursuit of completing the Snooker Grand Slam “Triple Crown”.
Zhao has already won the world and British titles in his short career and scored four consecutive half-centuries in a 6-2 victory over Gary Wilson at Alexandra Palace.
