Indian Singer and actor Prashant Tamang died of suspected cardiac arrest in the capital Delhi on Sunday. He is 43 years old.
His body was taken to his home in the eastern state of West Bengal for final rites, where fans and friends flocked to pay their last respects.
Tamang is a well-known public figure who shot to fame after winning in 2007 indian idollocal version british show Pop idol.
He went on to star in several television shows and films, and is credited with bringing regional languages from northeastern India into the mainstream.
Tamang’s co-star in the singing reality show, Bhaven Dhanak, confirmed the news of his death.
“Given how sudden it happened, we don’t have a lot of details, but it’s said to be a cardiac arrest,” he told reporters india today. “We are also awaiting information about the funeral.”
According to Delhi Police, around 3:10 pm, Thaman’s wife rushed him to the hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. His body was later shifted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Delhi police said they did not suspect any foul play.
Tamang’s wife, Martha Aley, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support. “Thank you everyone. I’ve been getting calls from all over the world, people I know and people I don’t know,” she told news agency ANI. “People were standing outside my house, people were coming to the hospital to see him one last time.”
“This is really overwhelming for me, please love him as much as you loved him. He was a great soul and he was a great man. I hope you remember him like this,” she added.
Addressing speculation about Tamang’s death, she said: “It was a natural death. He was asleep when he left us. I was with him at the time.”
Dhanak said Tamang moved to Delhi a few years ago and he is excited about his journey as an actor. “We were roommates during Indian Idol and he was one of the nicest people you could ever know. We will all miss him terribly. He was truly a great man and his passing is a huge shock to all of us.”
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed condolences on the singer’s death. She wrote on “X”: “Saddened by the sudden and untimely passing today of Prashant Tamang, pop star of ‘Indian Idol’ fame and an artist of national renown. His roots in our Darjeeling hills and his past association with the Kolkata Police gave us Bengalis a special respect for him.”
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang also expressed deep condolences over the loss, calling Tamang an inspiration.
“I am deeply saddened by the untimely passing of renowned singer and actor Prashant Tamang. His incredible journey on the Indian Idol stage and his historic win was a shining example of perseverance, talent and humility,” he said.
“His passing is a huge loss, not only for his family and loved ones, but also for the many fans whose hearts were touched by his soulful voice and inspiring life story.”
After winning the third competition indian idol, Tamang is famous for songs such as bil gorkali and Asare Mahinama.
He made his debut in Nepali film industry gorkhapaltan 2010. Subsequently, introductions such as Angelo Yo Maya Co, To Maya Ma, and moleIt was inspired by the heroic actions of Gurkha soldiers during the 1999 Kargil War against Pakistan.
He also won praise for his role as Daniel Lecho in the show’s second season Patal Lok.

Tamang is survived by his wife and a daughter.
