a “possible riot” broke out in washington state prison In Georgia, at least three inmates were killed and about a dozen injured.
Sheriff Joel Cochran told local television early Sunday afternoon Wardy Multiple fights broke out inside the jail in Davisboro, Washington County, Georgia, sending 13 inmates to the hospital. The prison is located about 50 miles southeast of Augusta.
Cochran said that while a fight broke out among inmates, a correctional officer may have been injured.
The Washington County coroner confirmed that two people were initially killed in the fight and a third died Sunday night.
“It’s not uncommon for these things to happen in correctional facilities; however, I don’t think we’ve had an incident of this magnitude in a while,” Cochran said.
By 6 p.m., the jail was deemed safe after the Sheriff’s Office, Georgia State Patrol, Davisboro Police Department, Milledgeville Police Department and Johnson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the situation. The State Coroner’s Office is also on scene.
Video shared by the Georgia Coalition for Human Rights and Civil Rights appears to show inmates running through an outdoor hallway as a security guard walks toward them in the opposite direction.

Another video posted by the Georgia Coalition for Human Rights and Civil Rights showed what appeared to be three police helicopters on the prison skyline.
The Georgia Coalition for Human Rights and Civil Rights said in a Facebook post that the riot broke out in the afternoon.
“According to multiple sources, the offender overpowered a guard and broke in for a visit,” the group said.
“Several criminals were covered in blood during their visits.
“It was a very chaotic scene. One officer tried to close the door so they couldn’t get in but they restrained her.
“There are also reports that a helicopter was called to the prison.”
