Google Some of them have been removed AI The health summary was released after a report said an investigation found false or misleading information had been provided in some cases.
earlier this month this guardian Said he found it Some artificial intelligence overview snapshots, where Using generative artificial intelligence Summarizing key information at the top of search results can put people at risk.
In one instance, the newspaper found that the AI did not take into account enough background information when asked the question “What is the normal range for a liver blood test?” nor did it take into account the patient’s nationality, gender, race or age. Experts warn this could lead severely unwell people to mistakenly think their results are normal and not attend follow-up appointments.
Now Google has removed the AI overview of the question and the search for “What are the normal ranges for a liver function test?” newspaper reports. The company, which holds more than 90% of the global search engine market, emphasizes that AI results are updated if they are found to lack context.
a spokesman told guardian: “We do not comment on individual removals from searches. If the AI overview misses some context, we work to make broad improvements and take action in accordance with our policies where appropriate.
“Our internal team of clinicians reviewed the content shared with us and found that in many cases the information was inaccurate and was also supported by high-quality websites.”
Vanessa Hebditch, director of communications and policy at charity the British Liver Trust, welcomed the company’s response but warned there were still risks in using AI to obtain such important information.
“This is great news and we are pleased to see the Google AI Overview removed in these cases,” she told guardian. “However, if the question is asked in a different way, a potentially misleading overview of AI may still be given, and we remain concerned that other health information generated by AI may be inaccurate and confusing.”
After entering a slightly modified version of the original query (such as “lft reference range” or “lft test reference range”), the AI overview is still provided. Google tells guardian It is reviewing these new examples.
Ms Hebditch continued: “A liver function test, or LFT, is a collection of different blood tests. Understanding the results and what to do next is complex and involves more than just comparing a set of numbers. But the AI overview displays the list of tests in bold, making it easy for readers to miss the numbers and even tests that may not be suitable for them.
“Furthermore, the AI overview fails to warn someone that these tests can yield normal results when someone has severe liver disease and requires further medical care. This false assurance can be very harmful.”
independent Google has been contacted for further comment.
