On Monday, January 5, four Aam Aadmi Party MLAs were suspended for the remaining three days of the winter session of the Delhi Assembly.

The MLAs – Sanjeev Jha, Som Dutt, Kuldeep Kumar and Jarnail Singh – were punished for disrupting Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena’s address.

The first session of the year began with Saxena’s speech, which was interrupted by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs protesting against the air pollution levels in the city. After the protest, Speaker Vijendra Gupta ordered several opposition members to be thrown out of the House.

When the House resumed after the address, PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh moved a proposal for suspension of the four MLAs.

“The members like Sanjeev Jha, Kuldeep Kumar, Som Dutt and Jarnail Singh who created the disturbance should be suspended for the remaining three days of the session,” Singh said while reading the resolution. After this the House passed the resolution.

Speaker Gupta said that the AAP MLAs have shown contempt towards the House and the Lieutenant Governor by creating disruption without any valid reason.

Responding to the action, Sanjeev Jha said the suspension was a result of the members raising the issue of pollution.

The House passed another resolution moved by the PWD minister to advance the assembly meetings. The session will now start at 11 am instead of 2 pm.
