After Joyce (Winona Ryder) beheads the villain, Hopper (David Harbour) and Murray (Brett Gelman) plant a bomb on the interdimensional bridge to the Upside Down, and Eleven seemingly remains in the underworld to sacrifice herself.
Since most of the episode isn’t over yet, the time jumps forward to 1989, and we see what happened to the remaining characters – the crew has begun to move on from the traumatic events of the show, and Joyce and Hopper are engaged.
In the show’s final scene, Mike (Finn Wolfhard) claims that Eleven actually faked her own death and successfully escaped from the Upside Down. As he speaks, we see an older Eleven traveling through a distant place before arriving at a town.
It’s unclear whether Eleven actually survived, with series co-creator Ross Duffer stating that “whether true or not, she lives on in their hearts.”
Many viewers were critical of the ending, and the decision to eliminate Vecna at the beginning of the episode was often criticized on social media.
