A fire broke out in a Swiss ski resort, killing 40 people and injuring 119 others, including a former pupil of a British school who is missing.

Charlotte Niddam, believed to be 15, attended Immanuel College in Hertfordshire, according to multiple reports.

In a statement published by several newspapers, the private Jewish school confirmed her disappearance.

The school urged the community to come together and said it was “praying for a miracle”.

Photos of the missing teenagers were posted on an Instagram account set up to help find survivors.

She had been working as a nanny in the area, according to the Crans Montana resort website.

The fire broke out as revelers celebrated New Year’s Eve.

Valais canton police chief Frederic Giesler said the injured included 71 Swiss, 14 French and 11 Italians, as well as citizens of Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Luxembourg, Belgium, Portugal and Poland.

The nationalities of the 14 people are still unclear.

Mourners left candles and flowers at a makeshift memorial near the Constellation Bar in Crans-Montana. Hundreds of people prayed for the victims at nearby Montana Station Church.

Emanuele Galeppini, a 17-year-old Italian golfer with a promising international profile, is officially listed as one of the missing Italian nationals.

Authorities are planning to investigate whether materials used in venue ceilings to dampen noise comply with regulations.
