Mail Finally hoping to get rid of one of the more awkward restrictions and let people choose the new one e-mail address.

Since it was first launched over 20 years ago, Google Ask people to keep the email address they originally signed up with on their Gmail account. The only way to get a new email address is to set up an entirely new account, but this can come with a host of other problems, such as not only being unable to access your email data, but also being unable to access related services you’re logged in with that account, such as YouTube.

This means people can stay in touch with an email address long after it is no longer useful. For example, someone who registered when they were younger may find themselves embarrassed by their address, or someone who changed their name may be forced to continue calling themselves by their old name.

Now, it appears that Google is finally testing a new feature that will let people change the address of a Gmail account while still retaining the account itself. All their emails and other data will remain intact.

The feature appears to be quietly rolling out right now. It was initially announced on a Telegram group and currently appears to be available only to users with Hindi accounts.

But an updated support page on the Hindi section of Google’s website suggests it will begin rolling out more widely. However, the English page currently states that the account address cannot be changed.

When a user changes their email address using the tool, the old email address will remain active as an alias. This means emails sent to this account will still reach the old account.

It does have some limitations. The support page says the change can only happen once a year, and people can only make it three times in total.
