791 drone intrusions reported at IB in 2025: Defense Ministry

The Defense Ministry on Wednesday said a total of 791 drone intrusions during 2025 – nine incidents along the international border in Jammu and Kashmir and 782 incidents along the international border in Punjab and Rajasthan – were recorded.

“The drone threat was largely contained by effective use of its own spoofers and jammers on the western front,” it said.

During this period, 237 drones were downed by Indian forces along the IB sector – “five drones with munitions, 72 drones with narcotics and 161 drones without any payload”, the ministry said in a year-end review statement.

“A total of 791 drone intrusions (nine incidents along the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir and 782 incidents along the International Border in Punjab/Rajasthan) were recorded during the year,” it said.

The ministry said the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir remains “completely under control” due to the tireless efforts of the Indian Army.

It said the people have chosen the path of development and are actively participating in large numbers in all government and military-run initiatives.

The ‘whole-of-nation’ approach resulted in “reduced levels of violence, reduced protests and no incidents of stone pelting”.

The statement also underlined that at least 100 terrorists were killed in response to the horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam on May 7, in which 26 innocent civilians were killed.

As part of this military action, the Indian Armed Forces launched a series of precision missile strikes on nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, resulting in a four-day standoff between India and Pakistan.

Hostilities ended on 10 May with an agreement to halt military operations following hotline talks between military officials from both sides.

“The situation remains stable, albeit unpredictable, following the DGMO talks on May 10 and May 12. However, Pakistan’s efforts to covertly infiltrate terrorists through the LoC (Line of Control) and IB sector have increased,” the ministry said in its review.

“Pakistan attempted to activate the Poonch-Rajouri region as a center of proxy war during the year 2023-24,” it said.

The statement said, therefore, the deliverables for 2025 were clearly defined in terms of maintaining a strong anti-infiltration grid, sustained conduct of operations in the middle and high reaches to remove or neutralize terrorists and reducing local recruitment of cadres by creating an environment conducive to growth.

“The security situation in the hinterland has been steadily improving since 2019,” it said.

The functionality of the training camps, presence of terrorists in the launch pads and continued infiltration attempts reinforce Pakistan’s “continued intention to pursue proxy war strategy”, the ministry said.

“Significant efforts are being made by Pakistan to exploit the IB region not only to smuggle weapons and narcotics using drones but also to infiltrate a large number of terrorists,” it said.

The ministry further said that considering “ongoing operational concerns”, emergency procurement was approved in specific technology domains of drones and counter-drones, weapon systems, precision ammunition, electronic warfare systems, surveillance systems, etc.

“A total of 29 capacity development schemes have already been contracted and another 16 schemes are likely to be contracted in December 2025,” it said in its review.

On achieving ‘self-reliance’ in drone manufacturing and ammunition production, the ministry said “515 Army base workshops and select Corps Z workshops/EME battalions have established reliable drone manufacturing capability with in-house expertise and collaboration with subject matter experts”.

“The facilities are state-of-the-art, meeting the quality requirements of drones. A total of 819 drones (surveillance-193, kamikaze/armed/weaponized-337, first pilot scene-289) have been manufactured so far by EME units.”
