Madhya Pradesh Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya on Wednesday, December 31, admitted lapses by the authorities regarding water pollution in Indore, which has cost seven lives so far, and said those found guilty will not be spared, irrespective of their rank.

Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava has confirmed the death of seven people so far within a week due to falling ill due to contaminated water in Bhagirathpura area of Indore, the cleanest city of the country.

Officials said more than 1,100 people have been affected in some way or the other by the vomiting-diarrhea outbreak in Bhagirathpura in the last one week, out of which 111 patients have been admitted to hospitals.

Bhagirathpura comes under urban development and housing assembly constituency Indore-1 of Vijayvargiya.

When asked about the contaminated drinking water incident, the MP Assembly Affairs Minister told reporters, “I think a mistake has been made, but instead of discussing it now, it is better that we first ensure that all the patients get cured and create a positive environment.”

He said that no person responsible for the contaminated drinking water incident would be spared, even if the officer concerned was in a very high position.

On the number of deaths due to contaminated water, Vijayvargiya said, “I will not comment on it at the moment because some people have died naturally, while some deaths have also occurred in this incident. So after investigation by doctors and administration, we will share the figures.”

The minister said the number of patients suffering from vomiting and diarrhea has reduced in Bhagirathpura, but admissions to hospitals and health centers are still continuing.

He said that four ambulances and separate teams of medical personnel have been deployed in Bhagirathpura area.

According to Vijayvargiya, separate wards have been made for patients in the city’s government Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital and private Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences.

He said private hospitals in Bhagirathpura have been informed that the state government will bear the entire medical treatment cost of all patients.

Municipal Corporation Commissioner Dilip Kumar Yadav said a leak was detected at one point in the main water supply pipeline in Bhagirathpura, over which a toilet was found and the water was possibly contaminated due to this leak.

An official said that following the instructions of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, a zonal officer and an assistant engineer of the Municipal Corporation have been suspended with immediate effect, while the services of a sub-engineer in-charge have been terminated.

The official said a three-member committee headed by an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer has been formed to investigate the contaminated drinking water incident.
