Former Australia batsman Damian Martin has fallen into a coma after contracting meningitis.
Cricket Australia confirmed the 54-year-old, who played 67 Test matches between 1992 and 2006 and won two World Cups, fell unwell on Boxing Day and is being treated in a Brisbane hospital.
Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg said in a statement: “I was saddened to hear the news of Damien’s illness. Everyone at Cricket Australia and the wider cricket community sends his best wishes.”
Adam Gilchrist, Martin’s friend and former teammate, added: “He is getting the best treatment possible and (Martin’s partner) Amanda and his family know that many people are sending their prayers and well wishes.”
Former AFL star Brad Hardie told listeners on his radio show on Perth’s 6PR station: “Damien Martyn, the champion from WA (Western Australia), unfortunately fell ill on Boxing Day and is currently in a hospital in Queensland.
“I want everyone to send their best wishes and positive thoughts to Mato. Hopefully he gets through this because this is really serious.”
Northamptonshire manager Darren Lehmann, a former team-mate of Martin’s, posted a message of support on X.
“Lots of love and prayers going forward Damian Martin. Stay strong and fight the legend. Love to the family.”
The stylish batsman, who represented Yorkshire as an overseas player in 2003, posted his outlook for the fourth Ashes Test in Melbourne on X just before Christmas.
He wrote: “If the old team ever plays again this is it. Boxing Day Test match. What a disaster.”
