president Donald TrumpGovernment announces freeze on childcare funding on Tuesday minnesota There have been a series of fraud cases in recent years.
acting director Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Jim O’Neill announced on the social platform X that the move was in response to “blatant fraud that appears to be rampant in Minnesota and across the country.”
“We have turned off the funding spigot and we are uncovering fraud,” he said.
O’Neill said all payments made through the Administration for Children and Families, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, require “justification and receipt or photographic evidence” before money can be sent. He said they also have a fraud reporting hotline and email address.
The news comes after a multi-year investigation that began with the nonprofit Feed Our Future’s $300 million program that resulted in the conviction of 57 defendants in Minnesota. Prosecutors say the organization was at the center of the country’s largest COVID-19-related fraud scam, with the defendants taking advantage of a federally funded, state-run program designed to feed children.
A federal prosecutor claimed in early December that half or more of the approximately $18 billion in federal funds supporting 14 projects in Minnesota since 2018 may have been stolen. Most of the defendants are Somali-American, they said.
O’Neal also singled out a right-wing influencer who posted a video on Friday claiming he uncovered up to $100 million in fraud at a day care center run by Somali residents in Minneapolis. O’Neill said he has asked Minnesota’s governor. Tim Waltz Submit an audit of these centers including attendance records, licensing, complaints, investigations and inspections.
Walz, the 2024 Democratic vice presidential candidate, said fraud will not be tolerated and that his administration “will continue to work with federal partners to ensure it is stopped and those who commit fraud are caught.”
Walz said an audit conducted by the end of January should provide a better understanding of the extent of the fraud. He said his government was taking aggressive action to prevent more fraud. He has long defended his administration’s response.
