Thieves broke into a safe inside a German bank vault during the holidays on Monday and stole property worth tens of millions of euros, police said.

About 2,700 bank customers were affected by the theft gelsenkirchenpolice and the savings bank said.

Police spokesman Thomas Nowaczyk said investigators believed the theft was worth between 10 and 90 million euros ($1.17 to $105.7 million).

German news agency dpa reported that the theft may be one of the largest robberies in Germany.

The bank remained closed on Tuesday and about 200 people showed up asking to enter, the dpa news agency reported.

Police and firefighters were summoned to the bank branch by a fire alarm around 4am on Monday.

Witnesses told investigators they saw several men carrying large bags in a nearby parking lot over the weekend. Video from the garage showed masked people inside a stolen vehicle early Monday, police said.

Gelsenkirchen is approximately 192 kilometers (119 miles) northwest frankfurt.
