man suspected of assault Hospital Police said staff were armed after he was denied an appointment.

Police were called to Newton Community Hospital in Newton-le-Willows just after 12pm on Tuesday after reports that a man had attacked several people with a weapon, possibly a crowbar. Merseyside Police explain.

Police said the man is believed to have become “increasingly agitated” after his request for a hospital appointment was refused and he was asked to leave.

Newton-le-Willows ward councilor Seve Gomez-Aspron said his father, who lives next door to the hospital, heard someone had attacked staff at Newton Community Hospital and damaged the reception area.

Mr Gomez-Asprang said: “At around 12.10pm I received a call from my father, who lives near the hospital, saying that a family friend of mine had come to his house to tell him that someone was attacking staff inside the hospital and vandalizing the reception area.

“I live nearby so I asked him to call the police and I rushed to the hospital and was there within minutes.

“From call to arrival, we conducted a massive emergency response to deal with this incident.

“I can only thank Merseyside Police and North West Ambulance Service for responding so quickly and effectively in circumstances where the dangers were unknown.

“This is shocking, but as always we need to wait for the full facts, not speculation.”
