Museum visitors are often prohibited from touching original artifacts or replicas to prevent items from deteriorating over time. Under Mexico’s federal antiquities law, anyone who touches, damages or removes museum artifacts or archaeological items may be fined or face jail time.
It was unclear whether the stele was immediately inspected and whether there was any damage to the stele after being touched. The museum did not immediately return The Independent Request for comment.
