At least 32 people have fallen ill due to suspected water pollution in an area of Indore city in Madhya Pradesh, officials said on Tuesday, December 30, prompting authorities to collect drinking water samples for testing.

He said that Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has directed the administration of Indore, the cleanest city of the country, to ensure prompt and quality treatment for all patients.

Speaking to PTI, Indore district Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr Madhav Prasad Hasani said that 32 people from Bhagirathpura area have been admitted to various hospitals in the city in the last few days.

“Patients say they suffered vomiting and diarrhea after drinking the contaminated water,” he said.

Hassani said drinking water samples have been collected from the area for testing, and the report will come in 48 hours.

Residents of Bhagirathpura said they fell ill after drinking Narmada river water supplied to homes through the municipal corporation’s tap connection.

Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava said, “We have sent water samples for testing. We can comment on the matter only after the test report comes.”

Indore is dependent on the Narmada River for its water needs, and water is brought to the city from Jalud in neighboring Khargone district, about 80 km away, through pipelines laid by the Municipal Corporation.
