Comedian Bill Bailey has been named in the King’s New Year Honors List and awarded an MBE for his extensive contribution to entertainment.

The performer, who was born Mark Robert Bailey in 1965, earned his well-known nickname “Bill” after excelling in sport while attending King Edward’s School in Bath.

His formative years were spent listening to Monty Python records and playing in a band called the Famous Five.

After a spell with the theater company, a major performance by John Hegley inspired him to pursue stand-up comedy, prompting him to set up his own comedy club in Bath.

Bailey’s career really took off in 1995 with his show Bill Bailey’s Cosmic Jam. The production, filmed and broadcast on Channel 4, won him the prestigious Edinburgh Film Festival Critics’ Award and marked his major breakthrough.

This success paved the way for his own BBC comedy show, Is it Bill Bailey?1998, while at the same time in e.g. Do I have news for you?.

He became a familiar face on British television, starring in Channel 4’s BAFTA-winning sitcom black book.

In 2002, he captained the long-running musical comedy panel show on BBC Two never mind the buzzfollowing the late Sean Hughes.

His latest stand-up comedy performance, thinkerBeginning in 2024 and continuing into 2026, it perfectly blends his musical talents with his unique brand of whimsy and witty humour.

Reflecting on his victory, Bailey said he hoped his involvement would encourage “more men my age” to “consider taking up dance classes”.

Bailey is married to Kristen and they have a son, Dax.
