For the first time in 20 years, rain could invade the Rose Parade Southern Californiaa revered New Year’s Day event that attracts thousands of spectators and is watched by millions on television.
Over Christmas, storms caused flooding, mudslides and other disasters in the region. There is now a 90% chance of rain on Thursday pasadena, according to National Weather Service.
“We try not to say that word here,” joked Candy Carlson, a spokesperson for the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, the organizer of the 137th annual Rose Parade, which precedes the College Football Playoff game at the Rose Bowl.
She said it had only rained 10 times in the parade’s history, and it had not rained since 2006.
Wet weather is unlikely to deter floats, marching bands, entertainers and others from taking part. Carlson said float riders will be equipped with rain gear if necessary and tow trucks will be on standby in case of mechanical issues.
The audience also needs to be prepared. Umbrellas are not allowed in ticketed parade seating areas, but the ban does not include those simply lining up along the nearly 6-mile (9.6-kilometer) route. Roadside camping — without tents — begins at noon Wednesday. Rain is also expected that day.
“The theme of last year’s parade was ‘Best Day Ever!’ and it was the worst six days later,” Pasadena city spokesperson Lisa Derderian said, referring to the devastating Eaton wildfire in Los Angeles County. “We wanted to start the new year on a high note.” Hopefully nature will cooperate with the weather. “
