Four people were killed and at least nine others injured when a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus overturned on passengers near the bus depot outside Bhandup West railway station in Mumbai late on Monday night, police said. The bus driver has been detained for questioning.
The accident occurred around 10:05 pm when the area was crowded with office-goers returning home. Preliminary information suggests that the bus was moving backwards into the depot complex when it collided with a parked car and pedestrians nearby, causing panic.
Police said the bus unexpectedly moved backwards and hit several people near the entrance of the station. Four victims died on the spot or were declared dead on arrival at hospitals, while nine others were injured.

Emergency response teams using 108 ambulances evacuated the injured to nearby hospitals. Officials said the condition of some of the injured was critical.
Immediately after the incident, Mumbai Police, Fire Brigade and BEST Undertaking personnel reached the spot. Rescue teams pulled out the victims trapped under the bus and cleared the area to restore traffic movement.
A case has been registered and investigation is underway to find out whether the accident occurred due to driver’s negligence or mechanical failure. Police said a detailed mechanical inspection of the bus and statements of witnesses would reveal the exact cause.
