The ruling Mahayuti alliance has finalized seat-sharing for most wards ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.

According to BJP Mumbai President Amit Satam, the parties have reached consensus on 207 seats out of 227, according to news agency PTI.

Addressing reporters on Saturday, December 27, Satam said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will contest 128 seats, while Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena will field candidates in 79 wards.

According to PTI, Satam said, “A consensus has been reached on 207 seats in the BMC, of which the BJP will contest 128 and the Shinde-led Shiv Sena will contest 79 seats. Talks are underway on the remaining 20 seats. The decision on these seats will be taken after considering the candidates in the field.”

The State Election Commission (SEC) had announced that the civic elections in Mumbai are scheduled to be held on January 15, 2026.

Coalition strategy and campaign planning

Satam said the Shinde faction of the BJP and Shiv Sena will jointly contest the Mumbai civic polls, while the grand alliance also includes Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

He said that according to PTI, a joint meeting of the BJP and Shiv Sena was held to finalize the election roadmap, which included campaign themes, election management and coordinated rallies.

According to Satam, planning and coordination of the operation has already been completed. Trying to reduce the focus on seat numbers, he said, “It is not about who contests on how many seats. What matters is who can give corruption-free civil administration to Mumbaikars. This alliance is for Hindutva and to give corruption-free administration to Mumbai.”

Comparing it with the Maharashtra Assembly elections 2024, Satam said party workers had previously contested each other’s symbols, with BJP candidates using Shiv Sena’s ‘bow and arrow’ and Sena leaders contesting on BJP’s ‘lotus’ symbol.

Political competition and electoral background

The Mahayuti alliance will face a challenge from the opposition alliance of Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.

The total number of BMC seats is 227. According to PTI, there are over 1.03 crore voters in Mumbai, including over 55 lakh men, over 48 lakh women and 1,099 voters registered as ‘others’.

In the BMC elections 2017, the then undivided Shiv Sena emerged as the largest party with 84 seats, followed by the BJP with 82 seats. Since then, 46 Sena councilors have joined the Shinde-led faction, along with 16 corporators from other parties. According to PTI, BJP has also got six councilors from rival parties.

maharashtra civic election schedule

The State Election Commission has announced that elections to 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra, including BMC, will be held in a single phase on January 15, 2026, and counting of votes will take place on January 16.

The nomination process began on December 23 and will end on December 30, while January 2 is the last date for withdrawal of nominations. The final list of candidates will be published on January 3.
