World champion Luke Littler admits he still needs to work on his mentality despite his dominance.
Littler remains on course to become the first man in a decade to defend his world title when he reaches the fourth round on Saturday night. Mensur Surjovic 4-0.
He had the highest grade point average ever alexandra palace And has a 71% doubles success rate – a statistic that will shock everyone else on the court.
Littler proved to be one of the most successful teenage stars in sports history, with multiple championships under his belt as he played beyond his years.
But the 18-year-old admitted that his stage mentality could still be improved despite his maturity in a game that was deliberately slowed down by Suljovic.
He said: “To be honest, I still don’t think I’m that good mentally on stage and I might lose my mind a little bit and throw darts out of frustration.
“This could happen and we would all be frustrated.
“But I’m still only 18 and I can keep working hard and build on that.”
When asked what irritated him, he responded: “The lack of double plays, someone throwing a big ball on a pass, didn’t say who it was, but that’s it.”
Littler did become visibly frustrated against Sujovic as he threw 140 instead of 180 in his first game as he was desperate to complete the nine-province tournament.
“When I practiced, I practiced a lot in a row, so it was disappointing not to be there,” he said.
“Hopefully the Nine Darters will arrive in the next few days.”
Littler’s main goal is to become the first man since Gary Anderson Won consecutive world championships in 2016.
But he knows it’s too early to think about lifting the Sid Waddell Trophy again.
“You can’t think about it until you get to the final,” he said. “I always say that and I always hear Phil Taylor Speak up, work hard, get to the finals, and once you’re in the finals, settle in, you’ve done the hard work.
“You can only beat the person in front of you.
“people It’s fair to say whoever plays Luke Littler next will lose, but this is darts and anything can happen and anyone can win or lose.
“I have to show up and hopefully have a show like this.”
