Zelenskiy sparked fierce criticism after saying before a meeting with President Trump on Sunday that the draft 20-point plan was 90% complete.

The Ukrainian leader told reporters on Saturday afternoon that he was en route to the U.S. president’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, stopping in Canada to meet with his close ally, Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Security and territorial issues in Donetsk and Zaporozhye will be at the center of discussions as they remain key sticking points in ending the war. Zelensky said the country had its “red lines” but he remained confident a compromise could be found.

President Zelensky said shortly before boarding a plane to the United States that the massive bombing spoke volumes about Putin’s “true attitude” toward peace.

“Many questions have arisen in the past few days – so how did Russia react to the proposals made by the United States and the world to end the war? Russian representatives held long talks, but in reality, ‘Dagger’ and ‘Shahid’ [drones] Speak for them,” he wrote in a post on X.

“This is the true attitude of Putin and his inner circle. They do not want to end the war and are trying to use every opportunity to inflict greater pain on Ukraine and increase pressure on the rest of the world. This means that the response to pressure is still insufficient.”

Moscow has demanded that Ukraine withdraw its troops from a densely populated swath of the eastern Donetsk region, which Russian troops have failed to capture. Kyiv wants the fighting to stop on the current front. The United States has reached a compromise that would create a free economic zone if Ukrainian troops withdraw from parts of Donetsk, although the details remain a gray area.

Zelensky said the form of U.S. security guarantees was crucial to peace and that it would depend on what Trump was “prepared to provide, when and for how long.”

he told Axios Earlier this week, the United States proposed a 15-year security guarantee deal that could be renewed, but Kyiv wants a longer deal with legally binding provisions to guard against further Russian aggression.

Zelensky said he was willing to put the 20-point plan to a referendum if the United States could not be prompted to support Ukraine’s position on the land issue. For the democratic process to take place, Russia needs to agree to a 60-day ceasefire so that Ukraine can prepare for and hold the vote.

Trump said the United States was the driving force behind the process but he was confident Sunday’s meeting would go smoothly.

“He had nothing until I approved it,” the US president told Politico. “So we’ll see what he has.”

He also said he wanted to talk to Putin “as soon as possible” if I wanted to.
