The role that the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant will play in peace
A key point in the peace plan will involve taking control of Europe’s largest Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, which was seized by Russia in the opening weeks of the war.
Moscow has demanded that Ukraine withdraw its troops from the eastern Donetsk region, which Russian forces have failed to capture amid efforts to secure the entire Donbas region, including the Luhansk region.
However, Kyiv wants the fighting to stop on the current front.
Under the U.S. compromise, a free economic zone would be established if Ukrainian troops withdraw from parts of the Donetsk region, but details have yet to be determined.
Axios quoted Zelensky as saying that if he could not push for U.S. support for Ukraine’s position on the land issue, he would be willing to put the 20-point plan to a referendum – as long as Russia agrees to a 60-day ceasefire to allow Ukraine to prepare and hold the vote.
According to the Russian Interfax news agency, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said that the Kiev version of the 20-point plan is different from what Russia and the United States discussed.
But he expressed optimism that things had reached a “turning point” to find a solution.
The Kremlin said on Friday that Putin’s foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov had spoken to members of the Trump administration after Moscow received U.S. advice on a possible peace deal. It did not say how Moscow viewed the documents.
