Tripura Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen died on Friday, December 26, at a private hospital in Bengaluru at the age of 72. He was undergoing treatment in the Karnataka capital after suffering a brain stroke. Sen is survived by his wife, son and daughter.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over Sen’s demise while remembering his efforts in promoting the development of Tripura.
“Saddened by the demise of Shri Biswa Bandhu Sen Ji, Speaker of Tripura Assembly. He will be remembered for his efforts to promote the progress of Tripura and commitment to many social causes. My thoughts are with his family and fans in this hour of grief. Om Shanti,” the PM said on X.

According to a news report, Sen’s body will be brought back to Tripura on Saturday.
The state government has declared three-day mourning from Friday and ordered the closure of all government offices, schools, colleges and other educational institutions as a mark of respect.
Sen, a four-time MLA from Dharmanagar in North Tripura, had a long political career. He was first elected on a Congress ticket, later joining the Trinamool Congress in June 2016 and then joining the BJP ahead of the 2018 assembly elections.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha expressed grief over Sen’s demise, calling it “an irreparable loss to the party” and expressed condolences to the bereaved family. CPI(M) and Congress also paid tribute to him, describing him as an experienced leader with good knowledge of parliamentary affairs.
Leader of the opposition Jitendra Chaudhary said, “Our political ideologies may be different, but it never came in the way of maintaining good relations. Whenever we approached him on any issue he always responded positively. May his soul rest in peace.”
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condoled Sen’s death and described him as a grassroots leader dedicated to social issues. Sarma wrote on Twitter, “Saddened by the demise of Tripura Legislative Assembly Speaker Shri Biswa Bandhu Sen ji.”
