India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said incidents of violence against minority communities in Bangladesh – which number more than 2,900 – cannot be ignored, despite Bangladesh’s interim government repeatedly emphasizing the communal aspect.
The ministry’s comments come two days after a Hindu man named Amrit Mandal was allegedly involved in criminal activities. Beaten to death on Wednesday24 December.
Mandal’s death is the second such incident in more than a week. Earlier, another Hindu man, Dipu Das, was lynched to death in Mymensingh city of Bangladesh on December 18, 2025, allegedly on charges of blasphemy.
Ministry official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Friday, December 26, “More than 2900 incidents of violence against minorities, including cases of killings, arson, land grabs, have been recorded by independent sources during the tenure of the interim government of Bangladesh. These incidents cannot be ignored.”
He also said that India is in favor of free, fair and inclusive elections in Bangladesh. This will be the first election after former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power following protests.
After the death of factory worker Das, students and rights organizations have started protesting in Dhaka. This also led to protests in Kolkata and NCR, including outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi last week.
The protests outside the High Commission prompted sharp statements from both countries. At that time the Ministry of External Affairs had clarified that a group of about 25 people was immediately dispersed and assured that no attempt was made to breach security.

The interim government of Bangladesh in its response at that time completely rejected any communal narrative. Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry said, referring to Das’s death, “We reject the Indian authorities’ attempt to portray an isolated attack on a Bangladeshi national, who belongs to the Hindu community, as an attack on minorities.”
The Yunus government further said that it is committed to the protection of minorities, just as all governments in the region have the responsibility to ensure the protection of minorities within their borders.
