The Santhali language, which was included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution through the 92nd Amendment Act, 2003, is one of the oldest living languages of India.
It is spoken by a large number of tribal people in Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Bihar.
Speaking on the occasion, the President said that it is a matter of pride and joy for all Santhali people that the Constitution of India is now available in the Santhali language, written in the Ol Chiki script.
Murmu said, this will enable them to read and understand the Constitution in their own language.
The President praised Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and his team for bringing the Constitution into ol’ chicky script in its centenary year.
The dignitaries present on the occasion included Vice President CP Radhakrishnan and Meghwal, among others.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (December 26) described the issuance of the Constitution in Santhali language as a “commendable effort” and said it will help in deepening constitutional awareness and democratic participation.
Modi also said that the country is very proud of the Santhali culture and the contribution of the Santhali people to national progress.
“A commendable effort! Constitution in Santhali language will help deepen constitutional awareness and democratic participation,” Modi wrote on Twitter.
