More than half (56%) of holidaymakers are planning to travel more often in 2026 – but many are looking to cut back on their budget, a survey of city travelers reveals.
The research found that location is often given priority over luxury when choosing a place to live.
The survey was conducted in December among 2,000 people who had taken a European city holiday in the past 12 months or were planning to take a European city holiday in the coming 12 months.
When asked about choosing holiday accommodation in the city, 71% of holidaymakers said a prime city center location is important, while 7% would prefer luxury amenities, 9% would favor on-site food and drink and 7% would look for gym and fitness facilities.
According to the survey conducted for pan European hostel operator SafeStay, almost a third (29%) of holidaymakers expect to reduce their total spend on European city holidays next year, while 9% plan to spend more.
Asked what made their favorite European city memorable, almost a fifth (18%) of people said great local food and drink, while 15% highlighted the people they traveled with.
