In a new interview with MetroHenson – son of famous Muppet puppeteers Jim and Jane Henson – said that the press was initially “very critical” of his decision to remove some puppets from the cast.
He said, “I’ve decided that if we can’t find an enjoyable place to cast a famous Muppet character, we won’t put them in the movie.”
“So Rolf the dog isn’t in the movie; the band Electric Mayhem is behind Fozzivig’s song, but they’re not the characters; the Swedish chef is never in it. We decided not to worry about it if we couldn’t find a spot to cast a favorite.”
He added, there was also a more personal factor in his decision to leave some characters out of the adaptation – the death of his father Jim in 1990.

“You also heard that I was avoiding my father’s other characters besides Kermit, because Dr. Teeth was [voiced by] My father,” he said. “I was like, ‘We can work on Kermit, but I’m not ready to work on Dr. Teeth; I’m not ready to work on Rolf the dog. There is no scooter in it.
“There are a lot of favorites that aren’t in the movie, and I got some critical feedback because of that.”

Henson also addressed Kane’s performance as Scrooge, which has been celebrated for its sincerity despite the presence of Muppets around him.
“Its Because He is an excellent comedian and he knew that playing it straight would make the comedy coming from the Muppets even better,” Henson said.
“If I had got a purely dramatic actor from England – of whom there are many brilliant ones – without those comedic roles, I think he would always have felt like, I’m not doing this right. I’m supposed to be funny, I’m supposed to have my moments ’cause I’m in a Muppet movie,
He added: “And Michael, because his career is like half comedy, half drama – he definitely got that and so he was never insecure about that choice.”
