The Ordinary’s new ‘filler in a bottle’ serum made me look ‘more youthful’ at 40

Formula

The formula should pack a punch (Sabine Wiesel/The Independent)

I am not on my own; Volume loss typically starts to seem more noticeable in our 40s. It’s a natural part of aging, as we get older, all that smooth, firm and thick stuff starts to wear down. You may have heard of these: collagen and elastin. But at the same time, the fat pads that provide structure to the face also start reducing.

And that’s where Volufillin comes in. It is actually a trade name for the molecule sarsasapogenin, which is a fusion of plant extracts. Together, they are said to stimulate and promote lipid storage, increasing volume in areas where it is needed. Mostly, under the eyes, cheeks and temples.

To make the formula even more effective, The Ordinary has also combined it with Pal-Isoleucine (or Palmitoyl Isoleucine). It supports the production of elastin and collagen to further enhance its plumping effect, while also softening lines and wrinkles.

application

Unlike beauty enthusiasts who were grabbing Valufillin and mixing it into other products before this launch, this is a ready-to-use serum – it doesn’t need to be diluted.

It is designed to be used directly on targeted areas where volume is lost: under the eyes, cheeks, temples and smile lines. So, this is where I have been applying it every morning and evening after moisturizer.

At first, I was a little disappointed that it didn’t come with the brand’s trademark easy-to-use pipette, but then I quickly learned that a little goes a long way, and it would have been much easier to use if it didn’t have the simple one-drop dropper design.

It’s important to use it sparingly – it has a liquid, oily consistency that can feel greasy on the skin if you use too much. I also felt a tingling sensation with the product, especially under the eyes, but the brand warns that this is normal. It wasn’t bothersome or unpleasant, and if it had been, I would have stopped using it.

It made my eyes look less puffy and my cheeks look fuller (Sabine Wiesel/The Independent)

Forget those quick, over-promised results you hear about on social media. All skin care insiders will tell you that rejuvenation doesn’t just happen overnight, and that was the case with this new serum.

However, with consistent use, around a month, I started noticing a visible difference. Most noticeable, around the orbital area. The shadows under my eyes began to appear thicker and less noticeable. Before use, I looked tired and sometimes even unwell. Now, I think I look brighter and healthier.

My cheeks also look a little plumper, and my smile lines look a little softer, which is surprising in such a short time. My cheeks have always been large, but they feel firmer and younger.

Despite how impressed I am, it’s still important to be realistic with expectations. I’m predicting it will quickly go viral on social media and be compared to dermal fillers, as has already happened with Valufillin. So always keep in mind, as with any topical skin care, it is not possible to achieve the same effect as injections.
